During the Great Depression, a group of former Sunny Isles property owners who didn’t want to pay higher taxes managed to secede from North Miami Beach. By the late 1940’s Collins Ave was completed in Sunny Isles, that’s when two property owners, George Berman and Emanuel Seman, hired architect Norman Giller to built a different type of lodging, an oceanfront motel row, they wanted their inn to be inexpensive yet profitable. Mr. Giller introduces a concept unprecedented in the industry: the two-story motel. “Up to that point, a motel was the type of place to stop on the way to the destination.” Giller’s first two-story, Sunny Isles motel, the Ocean Palms, was completed in January of 1950, providing clean new beachfront rooms at a far lower rate than a regular hotel. It was a success, according to her granddaughter Giller; designed most of the 48 oceanfront motels on Motel Row the Suez, the Carib Motel, the Driftwood Motel, the Neptune, and the five-story Thunderbird. Sunny Isles wasn’t just motels, though, homes, condominiums, restaurants, stores, movie theatres, a bowling alley, and two miniature golf course, all were built in Sunny Isles during 1960s. Before 1965 there was no bank in Sunny Isles, Norman Giller founded Interamerican Bank of Sunny Isles that later merged with Miami Beach-based Jefferson Bank.
