History of Bal Harbour Village

• In the 1920s, the Detroit-based Miami Beach Heights Corporation owned 245 acres of undeveloped, partially swampy land that stretched from the Atlantic Ocean to Biscayne Bay.
• One of its owners assumed the duties of a Bal Harbour developer. Then, in 1940, during World War II, Mr. Robert C Graham rented the land to the United States Air Corps for $1 per year.
• The oceanfront area was a rifle range and the barracks for the soldiers on the west side of Collins Ave. In 1946, when the Air Corps left the barracks buildings as a thank-you to the property owners, Mr. Graham converted them into apartment homes.
• Tom Raffington built the first hotel, “The Kenilworth By-the-Sea.” Mr. Graham’s son created the first home at 160 Bal Cross Drive, and construction for the Sea View Hotel was finished.
• In 1925, the Haulover Inlet was cut through a narrow point in the sand between Bal Harbour and Sunny Isles Beach.
